Volunteers

From our inception in 1994, volunteers have been an integral part of every activity and program Friendship Circle has offered. Volunteers are the lifeblood of Friendship Circle.

With the completion of the Farber Center there are now a number of new volunteering opportunities inside the Dresner Foundation Soul Studio. We are now looking for volunteers who have a background in art and can help the facilitating artists in a number of different specialities.

If you are interested in volunteering at Soul Studio please see the Soul Studio Volunteer Process below.

Volunteer Guidelines and Descriptions

Direct Art Suport

The Soul Studio maintains high standards for our artists, and thus have high expectations regarding experience and expertise of our volunteers. Maintaining a high standard of qualifications for our volunteers helps us to offer the high quality instruction and support our artists deserve. Our volunteers working in direct art support maintain a regular weekly schedule, volunteering for one full studio day per week (9:45am – 3pm Monday – Thursday). This regular schedule helps us pair our art support volunteers with a studio artist to work 1 on 1 supporting a project. If you have experience making or teaching art, and can commit one day per week, please consider volunteering in one of the following areas:

Fine Art Studio

If you are a working artist, current or retired art teacher, or recent art school graduate, volunteering in our fine art studio might be a good fit for you. We are looking for experienced and enthusiastic volunteers with specific art expertise in one or more of the following areas to volunteer in our fine art studio:
  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • Printmaking
  • Sculpture
  • Photography
  • Graphic Design
  • Collage / Mixed Media

Fiber Art Studio

If you are an experienced weaver or sewer or a working fiber artist, our fiber arts studio might be a good fit for you. We are looking for experts with experience in one or more of the following areas to volunteer in our fiber studio:
  • Weaving
  • Sowing
  • Embroidery (machines)
  • Needlepoint
  • Photography

We are looking for experienced and enthusiastic volunteers with expertise in one or more of the following areas to volunteer in our ceramics department:
  • Wheel throwing
  • Hand building
  • Glazing
  • Firing

Other Soul Studio Needs

Though many people assume they can only volunteer through assisting our artists, the Soul Studio relies on our volunteers for help in many other equally important areas. Volunteering in areas other than direct art support requires only a 2 hour per week minimum commitment, though we are happy to accommodate a full day schedule for those who can offer it. Our volunteers in these areas can assist anytime between 10am – 5pm, Monday through Friday.

Frame Shop

If you have experience working in a frame shop, as a curator, or are a recent art school grad with experience preparing artwork, volunteering in our frame shop might be a good fit for you. We are looking for volunteers with experience in some of the following areas:
  • Cutting mat
  • Framing artwork
  • Curating artwork
  • Participating in curation discussion groups
  • Hanging a gallery
  • Quilting
  • Scanning and Photographing artwork

Wood Shop

If you are a working or retired carpenter or experienced woodworker, volunteering in our wood shop might be a good fit for you. We are looking for experienced volunteers comfortable using and instructing the proper use of power tools and hand tools, sanding, staining, and finishing, and interested in training in our ShopBot CNC machine.

Gallery Docent / Tour Leader

If you are a friendly people person, volunteering as a gallery docent might be a good fit for you. Our docents discuss the art and the artists in our gallery with visitors, attend the reception desk, answer phones, and lead tours of the gallery and studio. This is an important role being the public face of our studio, perfect for outgoing people who want to have a big impact on the Farber Center. No experience is needed and training is provided.

Operations Support

If you are someone who loves organization, volunteering to assist with our studio support tasks may be a good fit for you. Our studio support volunteers help with the critical tasks that help keep our studio running, like organizing and inventorying art cabinets, filing and scanning completed artwork, cleaning and organizing art supplies, sinks, and studio spaces. No experience is needed and training is provided.
